HITEC 2018: Hotel Technology Takeaways

The HITEC show in Houston was a rewarding one. With so many different streams of technology solutions to explore, one of the most fascinating aspects of our time spent at HITEC 2018 was that there was a sense that most exhibitors and attendees were on the same page in many important areas.

While at the event, we captured some of the buzz in a video we shot that we hope helped to frame the event for those in attendance, and those who weren’t, too.

We also talked a bit more about the solutions we brought to the event, connecting them to some of the major themes and industry challenges that emerged during presentations, panels, and seminars, and also from our conversations with booth visitors, too.

In greater detail, what were some of those major themes that have characterized this year's event? Here are a few that came up again and again during the course of our time at HITEC 2018.

The Evolution of Payments and Payment Technology

The emerging issues around payments was a highlight at this year’s show. Moving away from the fragmented nature of payments from region to region and toward a more inclusive model is definitely the next stage in the evolution of payments; more options for guests, and more in line with their preferred methods of payment that they’re used to when they’re not travelling.

This movement stems from a change in emphasis. Historically, the range of payment options was all about what an individual location was able to service. In the near future, reversing that model is the ideal. The aim will be to let the guest’s preference lead the process instead of forcing them to conform to what a single location can provide natively. In this new paradigm, all locations must be unified on a common platform to meet guests where they are as needed regardless of region.

As technology changes, measures to protect users have to change, too. The emphasis on security and privacy becomes all the more important for everyone concerned during that process. The arms race between those who implement strict security measures and cybercriminals that seek to exploit weaknesses will be drawn into even sharper contrast.

Fluidity and the Self-Serve Nature of the Guest Experience

Another major thread discussed and permeating conversations at this year’s HITEC was the idea of hotel brands embracing self-directed technologies for the guest. This represents a sea change in the industry as well, of course.

The objects of this movement vary greatly, from the way guests order room service, to mobile-based check-ins and check-outs, to our own kiosk in the hotel pantry to empower guests to get what they want according to their own schedules and convenience.

The underlying principle is all about fluidity; for a guest to be able to move from location to location and manage the conditions of their stay by themselves, empowered by technology.

This principle is a clarion call to hotel brands who are looking to meet the evolving expectations of tech-savvy guests. It’s also a way to re-think how staff do their jobs, and how employees might be able to better enhance other areas of the business in the light of a freer, more empowered guest.

The Movement Away from Specific Hardware

With the rise of mobile-driven technologies, it's becoming more and more apparent that reliance on specific hardware is likely to diminish over the next few years. It takes time for hotel brands and even technology providers to adapt and implement solutions with this in mind, of course. But the drive to move closer toward hardware agnosticism is a necessary consideration.

Right now in many hotel contexts, the guest’s mobile device is used to book rooms, order room service, access concierge information, and even to open the doors to their rooms with their phones as a replacement of the keycard. There’s ample reason to think that the mobile will rule the day in many other areas too.

This shift toward a more flexible model to serve guests has important implications as to how technology is invested in and integrated into an organizational platform. Once again, we see that the guests' needs define the solutions, and not the other way around. The solutions in place should continue to serve that ideal, and be scalable enough to continue doing so when conditions inevitably change, with specific hardware coming and going as needed.

The Importance of Teamwork

As technologies come and go, teamwork remains as a constant. On a personal level for our team, being together and sharing our impressions with each other based on seminars and speakers, not to mention conversations with attendees, was energizing to say the least. Innovative ideas are coming out of these kinds of discussions between our team members.

But another aspect of the importance of teamwork is that the hotel industry is a specialized one. The hotel brand's technology stack has to be consistent and integrated, with each component working together to create an uninterrupted and enjoyable experience for the guest. That takes expertise across the technology spectrum, with cooperative connections to the right partners.

As such, creating partnerships with the experts who really understand the space, and where the technology to support it is going, is paramount to meeting the future of the industry and thriving in it as it continues to evolve.

Collaboration with the right people internally and externally is vital more so now than perhaps ever before in the hotel space.

Hotel industry technology trends: your impressions

Did you attend HITEC 2018? We’d love to talk to you about your impressions, and how the challenges you’re facing now can be met with the right solutions, and the right partnerships.

Even if you weren't at the show this year, the changing nature of hotel technology driven by emerging guest expectations is still pertinent to success. What are your thoughts on this? We'd love to hear about them.
