FSTEC 2017 Anaheim: What to Expect

From Sunday, September 17 to Tuesday, September 19th, hospitality industry leaders will gather at the Anaheim Marriott for FSTEC 2017. The show will focus on technology in the multi-unit restaurant space, examining key trends and educating attendees on the future of the industry.

Members of the Vivonet team will be there to meet with attendees, hosting them at booth #719. Come on by if you’re planning on coming to the show.

Other than seeing our smiling faces, what can attendees expect from the show? What discussions around the trends and movements in our industry will be at the top of the agenda? Here are our forecasts around all of this which we hope you’ll find helpful.

Data as a key commodity and lever

By now, you’ve most likely read several articles about how the sheer scale of business data has expanded exponentially in scope even in the last few years. In part, this can be tied to the advent of IoT and to greater guest use of mobile devices that change the way brands must strategize around the delivery of products and services.

We expect this to be a very hot topic at FSTEC 2017. This will be bundled in with the themes of achieving greater personalization functionality, a more scalable engagement strategy throughout the guest experience, and how cloud-based operations help multi-location restaurants manage the deluge of data more efficiently, and more profitably too.

Native vs migrated cloud architecture

The cloud is always at the center of discussion, or should be, when it comes to how the multi-unit restaurants are evolving. The question of native vs. migrated as it relates to investing in tech platforms and in forming new partnerships with vendors who differentiate themselves with their platforms built strictly in the cloud will likely be a key point of discussion at FSTEC 2017.

Managing disruptive models, shifting to cloud platforms from hosted services, and the general impact of the cloud on operations are all on the agenda. Those vendors who provide services that are designed specifically for the cloud environment rather than merely adapted to it could mean all the difference to how a brand forges ahead in a new era with a new set of partners.

System interoperability and a competitive edge

The walls between applications, systems, and datasets are becoming more and more blurry and fluid. In addition to the standard technology “stack”, the language used to describe a technology platform centers more around seamless “ecosystems”, with interconnecting functionality that lend organizations a better view of the big picture.

The industry is moving toward models in which systems communicate with each other and offer a more flexible exchange and analysis of data. We expect there to be plenty of discussions around API, easy integrations, better ways to manage data via easy-to-use tools, and the potential that this more holistic tech ecosystem model represents for brands who want to remain competitive.

The emerging importance of robust back office tools

To circle back to the big theme of better data visibility and management in the light of a greater amount of accessible data, back office tools for multi-unit restaurants could not be more indispensable. The difference by 2017 is how useful current tools are, and how they must scale to meet new demands in an era when brands are using their data to stay ahead of competitors.

We expect the discussion of food costs, inventory, labor, and forecasting around all those areas using back office tools to be solidly linked to discussions around the cloud and how that translates to increased profitability. Real-time information and easy reporting are inextricably connected to the theme of effective and necessary digital transformation. Back office tools are an essential part of that.
