Better Enterprise Management Through Better Usability

Vivonet Enterprise Manager 3.0

In today’s complex hospitality environment, organizations need to have highly sophisticated technology solutions in order to succeed. The logistics of managing multi-unit operations are still fairly complex and sometimes even downright difficult. Enterprise management tools that lend greater focus is an essential part of gaining traction to succeed.

Industry leaders know that getting more precise views of their data can help hospitality companies of all sizes to achieve more than they could before. They also know that there are more opportunities to improve the experiences of their customers. They know to ask the right question about their enterprise management tools, too; how do I streamline menu management and reporting to drive efficiency? For our part, we needed to ask a pertinent question ourselves; how does a focused approach to usability design help our customers get it right?

To address that question from a product design perspective, we knew that we needed to build the solution into our product planning. We needed to identify all of the must-haves required to meet the rising needs of the hospitality industry. This is our approach.

Delivering clarity by improving usability

We know that when IT and operations professionals look for technology partners and the right data management and enterprise management tools, gaining clarity on what their data is telling them as quickly as possible is an essential business goal. So, having the right product design to support it isn’t just about the look in a cosmetic way when it comes to interface. It’s about creating an environment where it's easy to help customers find the right path to better decision-making.

From there, we knew we needed to focus on usability, particularly with the product with which I am directly involved; the newest and upcoming version of Vivonet Enterprise Manager that we will be rolling out in the next few weeks. These were our starting points:

  • Bringing this enterprise configuration and reporting solution in line with industry trends
  • Providing a modern, clean experience to match the usability standards of our customers' favorite consumer products
  • Creating a welcoming and easy to use interface that allows management to do what they need to do quickly and efficiently.

Our ultimate goal as a tech partner is about trying to help our customers achieve their goals around gaining actionable insights to grow their business. That requires clarity. From a product development standpoint, this sense of clarity was at the heart of our planning.

Addressing practical design concerns

When developing any product, we always want to make it crystal clear for users to instantly know where to start and how to find the right information quickly. We  made sure that the design of the new Vivonet Enterprise Manager reflected that requirement.

  • Buttons are easier to see.
  • The layout is responsive to provide the best possible experience for any device or screen size
  • The more refined user experience sets the stage for some larger design updates we have got in the works

This isn't just about product features or user-friendly design. It's about the possibilities they create; a faster understanding of the data through reporting to enable faster action taken to ignite company growth for our customers.

Faster product improvements balanced by smoother transitions

Technology changes fast, and so do the burdens on a technology infrastructure. What's needed is a balance between innovation and smoother transition between one version of a product and the next.

Getting back to our recent version of Vivonet Enterprise Manager, here's what we made sure was unchanged and easiest to find:

  • The steps to create and manage menus
  • The ability to configure POS touchscreen and buttons
  • The ability to add and manage employees

We made sure to build in a gentle learning curve with less of a need to re-train teams for using the tool. We've continued to integrate videos, user guides, and phone and/or customer support into the tool as well. This is all part of guaranteeing a smooth transition for our customers.

Striking this balance between constant and faster improvements and smooth transitions is vital to customer orientation. Understanding that at the development stages allows us to deliver product improvements at accelerated pace and with higher quality performance for the customer in mind. It also preserves the customer's ability to easily organize information relevant to their business and to report on it with confidence. That's the reason the Vivonet Enterprise Manager exists in the first place.
